Is Facebook Hiring Neuroscientists For ‘Mind-Reading’?

Facebook, who has left an impression on the social networking world, is working on developing a “brain-computer interface”, which may have the capability to allow users to talk to each other by way of mind reading.

Apparently, Facebook is secretly gathering a team of people that will make use of cutting edge neuroscience and electrical engineering to create the new interface. CEO and co-founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg believes that telepathy is the technology of future and adverts lead us to believe that Facebook is working on that very thing.

Apparently, the recruitment ads have popped up on Facebook for their hardware division in California, which specializes in brain computer interface technology. According to the same listing, that team will work on Facebook’s most futuristic and secretive projects. That engineer will work on “developing advanced [brain-computer interface] technologies”, which will involve using computers and artificial intelligence to work with “neuroimaging and electrophysiological data”, according to the ad and the same listing.

As part of a Q&A session in Townhall in 2015, Zuckerberg had explained how he is very interested in telepathy as the wave of the future and hoped that individuals would be able to “capture a thought… in its ideal and perfect form in your head and share that with the world”.

“One day, I believe we’ll be able to send full rich thoughts to each other directly using technology. You’ll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too if you’d like.”

Other jobs in the Building 8 team include jobs looking for people capable of building a “communications and computing platform of the future”. That platform also looks to utilize new forms of interacting with computers. It requires that the person doing it has experience of “speech and audio signal processing algorithms and systems”, and that those will be used to build the new system.

Another job listing describes that Facebook is looking for a haptics specialist, who would help the company use touch interactions to build “realistic and immersive” experiences.

All of the job listings for Facebook’s new Building 8 team are listed as temporary, two-year contracts that require someone who is “slightly impatient”. There is no clarity as to whether or not these will become Facebook projects or if these would become entirely different, new projects.
